How does it work?
Typically first hour acoustic. Second & third hour warming the crowd and switching between accoustic only and using backing tracks.  This helps the audience's ear.  My experience has taught me the ear tires after hearing acoustic only for three hours. Songs begin to sound the same. I begin recruiting people to help sing songs. Specifically anyone looking like a shower singer, air guitars, table tapper or shaking the tamborines and shakers I've laid out on tables.  
Stirring up the crowd for more Karaoke Fun, which with the right selected music, will turn into a Karaoke Dance Party where people are dancing, not sitting.
